Another success of Belarusians in combat sports! At the 2014 Kickboxing World Cup, which took place from May 16 to 18 in Szeged, Hungary, the Belarusian national team took the first two team places - among adults and among juniors.
The international tournament, the prestige of which is growing every year, this year brought together about 1,500 athletes from 26 countries. The Belarusians fought in the K-1, low-kick, full-contact, light-contact, kick-light and point-fighting sections, gaining gold, silver and bronze medals in each of them.
“Our team won the same number of gold medals with the Polish national team, but we performed better in terms of silver,” said Dmitry Pyasetsky, deputy chairman of the Belarusian Kickboxing and Thai Boxing Federation, at a meeting with journalists at the National Press Center. He especially noted the success of the juniors, who, before the victory in Hungary, took the first team place at the World Thai Boxing Championship in Malaysia (the senior team took the second place, losing to Thailand). “The success of the juniors is very encouraging, because we need a change,” says Pyasetsky.
Mikhail Stepanov, head coach of the national martial arts team, said that there was no break between the tournaments in Malaysia and Hungary, so it was difficult for the team to adapt. Gold medals in the K-1 section among the adults of our team were brought by Sergey Skiba, Yuri Zhukovsky, Ramil Navruz and Elena Muratova.
Vitaly Tsishurav, coach of the national kickboxing and Thai boxing team, also noted the cohesion of the national team: "Some fighters had to fight two fights a day, so mutual assistance is very important." He also added: “During the award ceremony, the Belarusian anthem was often sounded and the Belarusian flag was raised. I am very glad that our country is one of the best in such combat sports as kickboxing and Thai boxing."
