They say that electricians turn nuts less than 19 mm in size exclusively with pliers. Do not rush to laugh - sometimes it is the pliers that can cope with a licked nut, when even a spanner wrench has nothing to catch on. In the arsenal of a seasoned repairman there is one trick just for such a case, which was reminded by our reader in the January “advice of the experienced”.
So, let's see what pliers are capable of in our business. The "cobra" (in the photo it is on top) has a very reliable grip: the lips clearly hold the edges of the nut, sharp teeth dig into the metal. Screws with M8 thread and a 13-14 mm head are confidently unscrewed. Not very rusty M10 threads can also give way. The disadvantage of the "cobra" is its size. Many bolts and nuts of a car simply cannot be reached with it.
In the middle there are classic pliers with semicircular serrated indentations on the lips. With them, if you have enough strength, you can firmly grip the nut or bolt. And if it’s not enough, we will help the hand, as A. Mozhaytsev advised. Grabbing the head of the bolt, we pulled the handles tight with a rubber band, exactly as shown in the picture - closer to their ends.
The arithmetic is simple: ten turns of the tourniquet with a force of only 5 kgf give an additional half centner on the handles. If you want more - shake more! And if the tourniquet is stronger than a rubber one - for example, nylon - then you can tighten the turns with a suitable knob or nail
Below in the picture are pliers without indentations, with teeth. Such for our task are of little use.
In the bottom right photo, a double-leverage tool - it crimps a bolt just as well as a winding pliers.
